Buyers ask me about the QR tag more than almost any other line in our offer, usually in one of two forms: does it work, and is it the same as GPS? The second question has a short answer, which is no, and I will get to it.
I founded SimbaGo Tech and I write these answers myself. I describe the QR tag only as far as we have confirmed it. Anything beyond that, I tell you so.
What is a QR pet ID?
It is a code that belongs to one pet. The code sits on the collar. Anyone with a phone can scan it.
The owner sets up the pet in the app: name, breed, age and a photo. That profile is what stands behind the code. The idea is simple. A tag with a phone number can be scratched, can fade, and can show a number the owner has since changed. A code that leads to a profile can be kept up to date.
What does the finder see?
In the example screen on our website, the finder sees a short message: you found the pet, here is its breed and age, and its owner is waiting to hear from you. Below it is one button, which contacts the owner.
I should be clear that the screen on the site uses example data, and the page says so. A dog called Milo is an illustration, not a customer. What matters for you as a buyer is the shape of it: the finder sees a message and one button, and nothing more is claimed here.
What does the owner need to do?
Set up the pet profile once and keep it current. The profile carries breed, age and photo, and the QR pet ID is part of the same app that shows daily activity. That matters for retention. An owner who opens the app for steps and sleep is also an owner who keeps the profile fresh without being asked.
If you plan to sell the collar, put one line in your own instructions: check that the profile is filled in before the first walk. It is a small thing that makes the tag useful on the day it is needed.
Is a QR pet ID the same as GPS?
No, and I want to be exact about this. A QR tag helps a finder reach the owner. It does not tell the owner where the pet is. GPS location is on my list of things I do not claim as confirmed for this collar, so I will not say that it finds a runaway dog on a map.
Think of it as the part of a lost-pet story that starts when a stranger holds the dog. It makes sure that stranger has an easy next step. If your customers need live location, a different product is a better fit, and I cover that comparison in Smart collar or GPS tracker?.
Why do pet brands care about the QR tag?
Because it is the feature a customer can explain to a friend in one sentence. Activity, sleep and calories are useful, but a lost pet is the moment an owner feels the value of the product most.
It also changes how you describe the product. A harness holds a dog. A collar with a QR pet ID, tied to an app, gives the owner a reason to keep the product on the dog every day.
- It is easy to show in a photo or a short video: scan, see the message, tap the button.
- The finder uses their own phone.
- It sits in the same app as the daily numbers, so the owner has one place to look.
What can go wrong with a QR tag?
A few ordinary things. The profile may be empty. The owner's contact details may be out of date. A finder may not know what a QR code is, or may not bother. No tag solves every case, and I would be uneasy about any supplier who said it does.
Test it before you sell it. Scan a sample tag with a phone that is not yours and see what a stranger sees. If you would not be happy to read that screen as a finder, say so in your notes for the first batch.
Can you put your brand on it?
Your logo goes on the collar and on the packaging. What the app and the finder screen can carry in terms of your branding is not something I promise on a page. It is stated in the quote you receive. If a branded finder screen matters to you, ask in your first message.
How do you check it works before you buy a batch?
Order two samples. We ship two collars with a mock of your logo. You set up a pet, scan the tag with another phone, and read what appears. It takes a few minutes and costs you nothing beyond the sample cost, which we quote with the delivery time before you pay.
You are under no obligation to order a batch afterwards. That is the right place to test the QR tag, because the answer you want is not on my website. It is on your phone.
